The Town of Reading seeks a passionate collaborator and educator to work across the town to build a more just and equitable community culture. The Director of Equity and Social Justice will develop relationships with people and organizations to successfully plan, manage, and coordinate high-quality programs, education, and services that focus on diversity, belonging, accessibility, and human rights.
Reporting to the Director of the Reading Public Library, the Director of Equity and Social Justice will develop effective partnerships with Reading residents, community leaders, and local organizations to further the town’s commitment to creating and sustaining a community that values and demonstrates cultural competence.
This is a full-time, exempt, and in-person position with benefits. The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in a related field, plus at least 7 years of related work experience. The expected hiring range is $73,000-76,000.

The successful candidate must demonstrate experience in bringing people and networks together for collaborative projects, programs, and initiatives. This position requires the skill to connect with others and form positive relationships in a variety of community spaces.
Planning and Organizing
The Director of Equity and Social Justice is a new role with both a broad mission and detailed responsibilities. The successful candidate must be able to shift from assessing and setting long-term goals to securing and overseeing grant funding to implementing or assisting with specific EDI programs. The position requires excellent planning and organizational skills to integrate “boots on the ground” work and strategic future planning.
The successful candidate must have strong communications skills and the ability to network, facilitate, and partner both within the local government and the community at large. Other communications skills include the ability to speak professionally in order to present content and lead interactive activities with constituents, as well as listen and respond to community stakeholders with a range of interests, concerns, and perspectives.
The Director of Equity and Social Justice will effectively handle difficult, sensitive, or unexpected situations. A successful candidate can assess these situations and calmly identify solutions. Critical problem-solving skills that support relationship building and day-to-day decision-making include active listening, analysis, creativity, and curiosity.
