Sperry, Mitchell & Company (SMC)
Location: New York, NY
Sperry, Mitchell & Company (“SMC”) specializes in providing merger and acquisition advisory services. Founded in 1986, SMC is one of the oldest and most active independent M&A advisors in the United States. The firm primarily works with medium-sized privately-held companies, affording ample opportunities for new Analysts to interact with clients, corporate executives, and private equity professionals.
At SMC, we know that intelligent, driven, and hardworking people can acquire the skills and knowledge necessary for success in investment banking. Accordingly, we seek curious and critical thinkers offering a diversity of thought and experience who have demonstrated excellence in any number of academic backgrounds; applicants with humanities, social science, or science majors are strongly encouraged to apply. Solid writing, quantitative, and analytical skills are essential. Applicants must be organized and detail oriented, with the ability to learn quickly, think creatively, and work independently. While a basic understanding of corporate finance and accounting is a plus, we prize candidates whose energy and intellectual acumen enable them to readily master complex concepts and problems. A relevant internship is preferred but not required.
Analysts perform a wide variety of tasks, ranging from in-depth research to financial modeling to communicating with clients and other constituents. Responsibilities include analyzing potential clients and producing valuations, conducting industry and company research, drafting correspondence and presentations, and interacting with clients. Analysts work in teams with the firm’s senior bankers on every transaction. It is anticipated that, with experience, Analysts will assume greater responsibilities, such as marketing companies to potential buyers and negotiating initial offers.
We ask that new Analysts make a two year commitment, however, the position is ideal for someone who wants to build a long-term career. The average tenure of an Analyst at SMC is 4-6 years. Many of our previous Analysts have matriculated at top business schools after their time at SMC, while others have gone on to work at bulge-bracket investment banks, leading venture capital and private equity firms, and in industry. A few have even founded their own companies.
