Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
LEO Inc. offers free tax assistance through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to households with an annual income less than $56,000. Filing taxes can be difficult, time consuming, and costly which is why LEO provides free tax preparation and filing to our community to alleviate the stress of the tax season.
VITA volunteers are requested to dedicate a fixed number of hours weekly. The intern has flexibility with choosing their hours as long as the hours remain consistent throughout the internship period. The hours are up to their discretion and availability of the intern. No previous experience is required as all volunteers will receive free IRS tax preparation training beginning in late October or early November with support from LEO staff.
You will report to LEO’s VITA Coordinator. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Screening taxpayer clients to determine the type of assistance they need, confirming they have the necessary documents to complete their tax returns
- Providing free language interpreter services to customers who are not fluent in English
- Completing and successfully complete certification in tax law training
- Other tasks as assigned by VITA staff
Volunteers will gain extensive tax filing experience and build this transferable skill, and can supplement their accounting or business major by gaining hands-on experience with financial assistance. In addition, you will help tax dollars stay in the community and in turn, build a strong local economy.
If you have any questions regarding the VITA program or your responsibilities, please contact the VITA Coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org.
