The Associate will report to the Partners.
The venture associate at Ideatrek is a unique role, so we will take some time to explain it. Here is a surface level set of responsibilities:
This is a full-time, salaried position designed to prepare and train graduates for a career as a Partner in our firm. The role is a blend of sales, marketing, and operations. In addition to sourcing new investment opportunities for the firm, you will work with partners to support their portfolio companies.
However, the role itself is far more complex, especially in terms of your relationship with our company and how compensation works.
First, this is a partner track role meaning that we expect everyone will ultimately become a partner in our firm. You do not clock in or out, and your performance is results-oriented. We do not conduct performance reviews or promote people according to a corporate structure. In fact, even the partners and leaders in the company have technically the same relationship with the firm as you do. In other words, we have a flat organization.
Our payroll and pay structure is unique as well. All payroll is public information, and will eventually be hosted on a blockchain. Currently, it is monitored and verified by our local community, which would include you. Rather than conducting a length interview process and negotiating a salary, we start all new associates with $5,000 under their control. They can use this money to work on a project, invest, or just hold it subject to a mentor’s approval. The goal is to turn this into $10k. You can earn returns on your projects, or ask to work with other associates on their projects in exchange for a fee. However you go about it, once you hit $10k, you gain full autonomy meaning that you can use any of the money over $10k to pay yourself or whatever else you want to use it for.
Compare this to a traditional position, where you are paid a salary and are expected to deliver value to the company. Typically, the company expects you to deliver 100% of your salary and benefits as value to the company. So if your salary is $100,000, then you’ll be expected to generate $200,000 in value for the company. The surplus-value is then managed and reinvested into the company by management. In our company, you have full control over your surplus-value creation. So if you generate $200,000 in value, you could potentially pay yourself $190,000.
This model applies to all roles in the company. We expect all members to collaborate and coordinate to help each other achieve the initial $10k marker, and then develop relationships with each other either start a company, make an investment, or take a large salary.
