Global Healing’s Health Education & Advocacy Liaisons (HEAL) student internship is open to all advanced undergraduate students, providing a unique opportunity to experience pediatric medicine and community health through the Roatán Volunteer Pediatric Clinic (RVPC) in Roatán, Honduras. Global Healing established the Roatán Volunteer Pediatric Clinic (RVPC) in 2003 as a joint project with Public Hospital Roatán to provide much needed medical care to children on the island.
The Clinic is staffed with a Honduran pediatrician who is assisted by rotating American pediatric attendings and residents, and student interns from the HEAL program. Student interns will shadow doctors, triage patients, and practice medical Spanish. Outside of clinic, student interns may volunteer with local community organizations or carry out their own independent projects. The opportunity is ideal for undergraduates, but may also fulfill non-clinical elective requirements for medical students. Global Healing is happy to coordinate with interns’ departments to have this internship count for course credits. The internship is for one month or longer.
Global Healing connects Honduran and American medical professionals to learn from one another to become better practitioners using modern technologies that address locally relevant challenges. We are currently pursuing new initiatives in collaboration with the University of California San Francisco, University of California Davis, and Medic Mobile to improve newborn and child health on the island.
