Understand that this process may take a few years to complete! It is not a quick nor easy process!
The first step to becoming a special agent is to contact your local recruiter. For your school it is Jason Chudy of the Seattle Field Division. He can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org
When the ATF recruiter is accepting resumes, you will be asked to review the special agent information packet to make an initial determination whether you are qualified to apply. It is available here: https://www.atf.gov/resource-center/docs/atfp23104sainfopacket2014pdf/download
You will then need to respond via e-mail that you believe you are qualified and include a resume.
When a hiring announcement is pending, ATF will set up an information session with those prospective candidates who have submitted resumes. The information session is a requirement for a prospective candidate to continue in the application process.
Once the information session is complete, the names of those who attended will be submitted to ATF headquarters for inclusion in either the upcoming, or a future, hiring announcement, depending on the needs of the agency at that time. When the recruiter forwards the names to ATF HQ he or she no longer is involved in the hiring process and cannot answer questions on the status of an application. Once a prospective candidate has entered in the process he or she will be provided an e-mail address of where to address any questions.
It is highly recommended that prospective candidates set up an account on USAJobs and keep it updated with their personal and professional information. Hiring announcements are sent by invitation only, so the e-mail address provided on the prospective candidate’s resume needs to be one that will be checked regularly. School e-mail addresses that aren’t able to be accessed after graduation are NOT recommended. If you don’t have a valid e-mail address you will not find out about the hiring announcement.
Positions are available nationwide. While the needs of the agency dictate where new Special Agents are assigned you will be given the opportunity to provide input on preferred locations.
