Forest Preschool and Childcare is a preschool-modeled program in Baltimore City that serves children ages 18 months-5 years. Our goal is to connect young children to their natural environment by providing them ample opportunities to explore and learn outside. Forest Preschool is located in the Gwynns Falls Trails/Leakin Park. While we spend most of our time outdoors, we also have indoor classrooms at the Carrie Murray Nature Center. Our curriculum is nature-based and emergent; the daily rhythm is child-centered and incorporates kindergarten preparedness through natural approaches. Forest Preschool’s mission is to build community and stewardship by serving children, families, and educators in our local communities.
Interns spend 8-20 hours/week supporting teachers in the learning environment. Each intern will work with the Forest Preschool team in order to create a schedule that meets their academic requirements. Operating hours for the school run from 8:00am-5:00pm M-F.
Interns support lead teachers in many different ways. Some duties include:
❖ Setting up the learning environment for developmentally appropriate and nature-based exploration
❖ Observing children’s investigations and discussing observations at the end of class with teachers in order to plan curriculum
❖ Facilitating children’s play by asking open-ended questions and allowing children to be self-directed
❖ Observing lead teachers’ methods and asking questions about approaches; accepting guidance about approaches
❖ Classroom material preparation (i.e., cutting paper, cleaning paint brushes, etc.)
❖ Cleaning up activities & classroom at the end of the day
Interns follow the teacher’s lead and help the day run smoothly. The responsibilities listed above are just some of the ways that interns support children’s learning!
