The ILO
The International Labour Organization (ILO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that focuses on promoting social justice and decent work globally. Established in 1919, the ILO sets international labor standards, develops policies, and provides technical assistance to advance the rights of workers, improve working conditions, and foster employment opportunities. Through partnerships with governments, employers, and workers’ organizations, the ILO strives to achieve its mandate of promoting social justice and ensuring that everyone has access to decent and productive work.
The Internship Programme
ILO’s Internship Programme provides a wide range of opportunities for high calibre graduate/postgraduate students and recently graduated candidates who are looking for a “hands-on” learning experience in fields related to the ILO’s mandate and activities. The aim of our internship programme is to give the interns exposure to ILO daily work over a three-to-six-month period.
At the ILO, interns work directly with outstanding and inspiring professionals. Interns contribute to analytical work on principles, programmes and strategies, participate in meetings, and are exposed to high-profile conferences. The ILO Internship Programme will help to:
(a) increasing their understanding of relevant issues at the international level by direct involvement in the work of the Office and the application of ILO values, principles, programmes, policies and strategies; and
(b) gaining practical work experience from the ILO which is directly related to their area of specialization.
- To apply for an internship at the ILO, the candidate must be enrolled in the last year of a graduate degree (Master or equivalent) or in a higher degree programme relevant to the ILO’s work or have completed such a programme in the year preceding the application. The candidate must also possess a working knowledge of at least one of the ILO’s working languages (English, French or Spanish) and be able to adapt to an international, multicultural, multilingual environment. There is no age limit for applicants.
- Interns in Geneva will receive a stipend of total 2495 CHF per month from the ILO (Including CHF 45 as a contribution for a medical insurance) — Interns in the fields will receive a stipend based on grade G1/1 of the salary scale for the general service applicable at the place of employment (UN salary).

The next roster is scheduled from April 15th to April 29th.
The Special Allocation
The special allocation will fund a round trip plane tickets in an economy class for a limited numbers of interns exclusively coming from non/under-represented countries to the ILO headquarters in Geneva. This opportunity is limited to a specific number of interns exclusively from the countries listed here: https://shorturl.at/ajryG
The purpose of this initiative is to increase geographical diversity and mobility among interns and make the internship programme more accessible to them.
If candidates from your university may be eligible for this special allocation and meet the specific requirements, candidates should send application to the online roster. In case there is an interest from one of our department(s), the department(s) will directly call the candidate(s) for the written test / interview.
Given that we are launching a pilot phase and that the places are limited to benefit from this fund, we will prioritize candidates who are pursuing a master’s degree in universities from the countries mentioned on the list.
