Albemarle County is seeking a GIS Intern for its Department of Information Technology.
This position provides opportunities to gain knowledge associated with many facets of local government while assisting GIS Office staff on a variety of tasks and work related to the utilization of GIS in support of mapping, data maintenance, field work, and analysis as it relates to parcel management, addressing, planimetrics, asset management and natural resources.
Essential Functions:
- Evaluates, inventories, and corrects (as appropriate) parcel boundary discrepancies.
- Facilitates building data creation through digitization from as-built plans and GPS field work.
- Facilitates topology checks and edits.
- Updates planimetrics as appropriate from 2022 imagery.
- Manages monthly addressing notification mailings.
- Monitors and manages GISWeb & AddressInfo email inquiries.
- Assists GIS Office staff in the creation of standard map templates.
- Assists GIS Office staff in quality control checks as assigned.
- Assists GIS Office staff in the performance of their essential functions as necessary.
- Assists GIS Office staff on special project work as appropriate.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Competency: Knowledge/ Skills/Abilities:
- Working knowledge of principles, practices, concepts, and techniques of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
- Knowledge of map data structures including vector and raster data capture techniques.
- Working knowledge and skill in operating tabular and graphic display and output devices (plotters and printers) associated with Geographic Information Systems and supporting database and spreadsheet programs.
- Working knowledge of manual and computer cartography techniques and standards and traditional map production.
- Ability to follow detailed written and oral instructions.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with colleagues, government officials, general public and members of the professional community.
Required Education and Experience:
- Prefer a candidate possessing or working towards an Associate’s degree (or higher) in geography/cartography or related field with concentration in Geographic Information Systems applications and functional courses.
- Candidates working towards a high school diploma will be considered based on experience and related qualifications.
- Working experience with GIS applications and GPS equipment.
- SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid appropriate driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Work is typically performed in a sitting position at a computer monitor, a light table, or on a drafting stool at a drafting table.
- Regular field work throughout the County.
- Regular contacts are made with individuals from within the department, other County departments and agencies and the general public.
- Operation of a motor vehicle, operation of other office machines and hand tools requiring manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination.
Remote Work:
This position is eligible for a hybrid remote work schedule that is in compliance with the County’s Remote Work Policy and meets the operational and service needs for the position. All County staff must maintain residence within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Salary Range:
This is a non-exempt, part-time/temporary funded position at $15 per hour not to exceed 30 hours per week. The duration of the assignment is for up to one year from the date of hire. This position is not benefits-eligible.
