826LA Program Interns support all in-person and online aspects of the Programs at our Writing Labs. Reporting to the Coordinator, the Program Intern will complete daily program operations, including preparation and assisting in leading fun and interactive lessons for students ages 6-18 during our After-School Tutoring and our Tuesday and Thursday Night Tutoring. Interns also support outreach and recruitment strategies, tracking of data relevant to the program, as well as work on individual long-term projects with the purpose of the improvement of the program.
Intern Gained Experience:
The Intern will familiarize themselves with students of the programs, train to become the Point Person, and/or complete a long-term project based around the intern’s professional interest and the needs of the program. The point person is responsible for greeting volunteers, reviewing the schedule of the day, assigning them to tables, leading the entire session of after-school tutoring, and troubleshooting any concerns that may arise with support from the Tutoring Programs Coordinators.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the Program Coordinator with the preparation and implementation of After-School Tutoring (for students in grades 1-6) and Tuesday and Thursday Night tutoring (for students in grades 7-12)
- Support the organization of the writing lab, ensuring that all writing materials replenished and ready for use
- Support the preparation and outreach process for every session of tutoring
- Occasionally lead students or program in writing or other activities
- Create curriculum materials and other supplemental activities
- Assist with greeting volunteers, reviewing schedule of the day, and assigning them to tables
- Help to ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and organization of all program evaluations and data, such as student and volunteer attendance
- Initiate, work independently on, and complete short and long term projects related to the improvement of the programs;
- Provide support for other in-house programming and operations, as needed
Expectations:
- To work both collaboratively with the Program Coordinator and Volunteer Team, as well as initiate and work independently on short and long term projects
- To learn and implement accommodations based on specific student needs
- To answer basic organizational and programmatic questions to families and interested individuals on the phone or in person
- To learn and practice both administrative organization, accuracy, and timeliness, as well as classroom management and team leadership
- To take direction from others as well as offer their own ideas and recommendations
- To ask for support and resources when needed, and to speak up early when not able to meet deadlines and/or complete a task or project
Qualifications:
- Must be an incoming high school junior or enrolled in an accredited college or university
- Attention to detail, punctuality, flexibility to adjust in the moment, and willingness to learn and grow through practice
- Interest in leading groups of students in writing or other activities
- Speaking, reading, writing in Spanish preferred
- Knowledge of Common Core Math standards and practices preferred
- Interest in writing, education, nonprofits, youth development, and/or art education
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, public speaking is a plus
- Experience working with students, including relevant volunteer work, is preferred but not required
- Strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and deep commitment to student success
Availability and time commitment:
- Must be available at least 10-15 hours a week, and during program hours Monday-Friday 9am-9pm
